Established in 1974, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (Metropolitan Autonomous University) is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large metropolis of Mexico City (population range of over 5,000,000 inhabitants). This institution also has branch campuses in Azcapzalco, Iztapalapa, Cuajimalpa, Xochimilco and Lerma. Officially recognized by the Secretaría de Educación Pública, Mexico (Secretariat of Public Education of Mexico), Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) is a very large-sized (uniRank enrollment range: over-50,000 students) coeducational Mexican higher education institution.
